About the player
Joel Nilsson came through the youth ranks at Mjällby AIF and made his senior breakthrough there before a brief spell away at Kristianstads FF, returning to Mjällby on a free transfer at the end of 2015. That second spell became the most productive of his career: 156 league appearances and 29 goals from midfield, and a central role in back-to-back promotions as Mjällby won the Ettan in 2018 and the Superettan in 2019.
A free transfer took him to Hammarby IF at the end of 2021. His best individual spell in Allsvenskan colours came late in the 2022 season, when he scored five goals in his last six league matches as Hammarby closed out the campaign in third place. He stayed at the club through the 2023 season before moving abroad for the first time, joining Kongsvinger IL in Norway in March 2024.
After two seasons in Norway, Nilsson returned to Sweden in January 2026, signing for Halmstads BK on a free transfer. He has not been capped by Sweden at any level, senior or youth, and his career has been built on consistent output at club level rather than individual honours.
