About

Allsvenskan (officially Fotbollsallsvenskan) operates as the top-flight professional football league in Sweden. It sits at Tier 1 of the Swedish football pyramid, positioned above Superettan. The competition was established to replace the fragmented Svenska Serien and has maintained its status as the premier domestic division since its inception.

The league currently follows a double round-robin format where clubs play each other twice, resulting in 30 matches per team. This schedule runs from spring to autumn. The structure ensures a full season of competitive fixtures for all participating sides.

Promotion and relegation mechanisms define the league's movement. The bottom two teams drop directly to Superettan. The third-lowest Allsvenskan side engages in a playoff against the third-placed Superettan team. This system allows for fluid movement between the tiers.

The competition is distinct from the Svenska Cupen, which functions as a knockout tournament involving lower-tier teams. Allsvenskan remains a closed league of top-tier professionals. Historical reforms have shaped the calendar, including the shift to a calendar-year format in 1959. During a specific period between 1982 and 1992, the league winner did not automatically become Swedish champion due to alternative systems.

Malmö FF holds the record for most titles with 27 wins. Mjällby AIF secured the 2025 championship. Individual records include Sven Jonasson as the top scorer with 254 goals and Andreas Johansson for most appearances with 445. The league never suspended play during World War II.
