«The Iron Stoves»
Gösta Sandberg played 322 matches for Djurgårdens IF between 1951 and 1966, scored 77 goals. In 1991 the club named him its player of the century. He was there in 1959, when the footballers and the hockey players took the Swedish title in the same year.
That society came out of the island of Djurgården in central Stockholm, where 20 young men set it up in 1891. Football arrived eight years later. The first championship followed in 1912, during the Stockholm Olympics, and three more came before 1920.
Frank Soo's side took the 1955 title, and the following season Djurgården became the first Swedish club in the European Cup, going out in the quarter-finals to Hibernian.
Then the long fall. Relegation in 1981, a deficit of 12 million kronor in 1987 that forced the club into a limited company, three more relegations across the 1990s and a run at the edge of bankruptcy. The way back ran through the second tier: Djurgården won the first Superettan in 2000, finished second in Allsvenskan the year after, and in 2002 took the league and cup together, 36 years after the previous title. Two more championships arrived by 2005. When money tightened again, the 40 million kronor paid for the Kenyan striker Michael Olunga in 2017 steadied the books.
They first met in July 1899 and have played 231 times since, AIK ahead by 87 wins to 82. The other Stockholm derby, against Hammarby, sharpened after 2013, when the two clubs began sharing a ground — the 3Arena, which holds around 30,000 for football.
