About

The Svenska Cupen is the primary national knockout cup competition in Swedish football, organized by the Swedish Football Association. It sits at the top of the cup hierarchy in Sweden, distinct from the Allsvenskan and Superettan. The winner qualifies for the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds; if the winner already qualifies for Europe via league position, the spot passes to the fourth-placed Allsvenskan team. There is no promotion or relegation link to the league system.

The current format involves 96 teams in the men's competition. The structure begins with qualifying knockout rounds: Round 1 features 64 teams from lower divisions in single-leg matches. Round 2 adds the 32 teams from Allsvenskan and Superettan, also in single-leg knockout matches. The 32 winners advance to a group stage consisting of 8 groups of 4 teams, played as a single round-robin. The 8 group winners proceed to the knockout phase, which includes two-legged quarter-finals and semi-finals, culminating in a single-match final at a neutral venue. The women's competition involves 72 teams with a similar but smaller structure.

Malmö FF holds the record for the most titles with 16 championships. The current champion is Mjällby AIF, who defeated Hammarby IF 2–1 in the final on May 14, 2026, securing their first title. Notable historical events include the 1948 final, where Råå IF won because top-tier clubs were absent due to the London Olympics. The competition was known as the Skandiacupen from 1985 to 1996 due to sponsorship. The format has undergone significant reforms, notably in 2013 when a group stage was introduced for top-tier teams to increase competitiveness. The 2012 season had no winner due to a format restructuring. The key distinction from the Allsvenskan is that the Cup winner enters the Europa League, whereas the league champion enters the Champions League.
