Astrio's men currently play in Division 2 Västra Götaland, Sweden's fourth tier, some way below the level the club touched decades ago and further still from the standard set by its own women's teams.

The club was founded in Söndrum, on the edge of Halmstad, in 1933, by five men — brothers Stig and Orvar Nilsson, Erik Andreasson, Torsten Lasson and Donald Lasson. They took the name from Astrio Vienna, an Austrian side that had come to play a friendly against Halmstads BK. The shirt started out red, turned green in 1936, and is yellow and black today; the club has played ever since at Söndrums IP, which holds around 1,500.

Most of the club's honours belong to the women's section, founded in 1978. It topped the second-tier Division 1 Södra in 1990 and 1999, then added lower-division titles before settling into Division 3 Halland from 2006. The academy has kept pace — Astrio's P17 side won Sweden's national youth championship in 2025, beating Åsa IF 3-2 in the final.

Locally, the fixture with Laholm FK is the one the regional press calls a derby outright; games against city neighbours Halmstads BK carry their own edge too, especially in the youth and women's ranks, where Snöstorp/Nyhem is the more familiar rival.

The men's side has never gone much higher than the early-1990s Division 2 team built around Erik Wallstedt, a Sweden international who moved on to IFK Göteborg in 1992.
