About the player
Cape Town produced Luke Baartman, and it was against Kaizer Chiefs — the club he would go on to join — that he made his mark on South African football. In November 2023, at the age of 17, he became the second youngest goalscorer in Premier Soccer League history when he found the net against Chiefs while playing for Cape Town Spurs. He had made his PSL debut the previous month and finished his first senior season with two goals.
Cape Town Spurs' relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship in 2024 set up a dispute over Baartman's future. The PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber ruled in the forward's favour on 19 August 2025, and although Cape Town Spurs took the matter to SAFA on appeal, the move to Chiefs went ahead on a free transfer.
Baartman took the number 11 shirt at Kaizer Chiefs and made his debut for the club in the 2025/26 season. He was named Man of the Match in the season opener against Kruger United, a 3-1 win, in August 2026.
