About the player
Luca Erlein joined Hoffenheim's academy in 2018, and the progression bore fruit in January 2025, when he was given his debut for the senior side, wearing the number 54 shirt. The following season he was assigned to Hoffenheim II in the 3. Liga, playing in defence with the number 24 on his back, primarily as a centre-back or right-back.
Bayer Leverkusen signed him from Hoffenheim for a reported fee of €2 million and put him on a contract until 2030. Two days later he was sent out on loan to Energie Cottbus for the 2026/27 season, taking the number 21 shirt there. In the 2. Bundesliga with Cottbus he has made four appearances, scoring one goal and adding one assist.
Erlein has moved steadily through the German youth set-up, representing the U16, U18 and U19 sides, and has found the net at both U16 and U19 level. He was part of the Germany U19 squad that reached the final of the 2026 European Under-19 Championship in Wales, where they finished runners-up after losing to Spain.
