About the player
Tomoya Ando spent his university years at Aichi Gakuin before turning professional with FC Imabari in February 2021. He made 44 appearances there and scored seven goals, form that earned him a place in the J3 League Best XI for the 2022 season.
A step up followed in 2023, when Ando joined Oita Trinita in the J2 League. Across two seasons there he made 64 appearances, adding two goals, before a January 2025 move to Avispa Fukuoka took him into the J1 League for the first time. He started well: 36 appearances and four goals across the 2025 season were enough to earn him a nomination for the J.League MVP award.
Ando made his senior debut for Japan in 2025 and started in the final of the EAFF E-1 Football Championship, which Japan went on to win. A subsequent call-up for a friendly against the United States ended in withdrawal because of injury; by late in the year he had earned three caps.
In January 2026, Ando left Japan for the first time, joining FC St. Pauli in the Bundesliga. The fee involved was not disclosed, with his contract at Avispa Fukuoka close to its end at the time of the move. He took the number 15 shirt at St. Pauli and, by August 2026, had made 18 appearances for the club in his first taste of European football.
