About the player
Wessel van der Heijden's path to Helmond Sport has run through amateur football. He started out at SV ONDO, making his debut for the club's first team in 2021, before moving on to NWC in Asten, an amateur side. It was from NWC that Helmond Sport picked him up in the summer of 2025, bringing him into the club initially as part of the U-21 squad.
The step up in level has not yet translated into first-team minutes, but van der Heijden has already tasted matchday duty from the bench, named among the substitutes for Helmond Sport's fixtures against De Graafschap and VVV-Venlo in the 2025/2026 season. For a goalkeeper who spent his formative years outside the professional pyramid, simply being in the squad for those games marks a clear step forward.
He is still early in a career built almost entirely on amateur football until his move up this past summer.
