Wout Weghorst

Weghorst's arrival at Ajax in August 2024 closed a loop that started in the lower tiers of Dutch football. He came up through youth spells at RKSV NEO and DETO Twenterand before Willem II took him into its academy, and it was FC Emmen, not a big club, that gave him his professional debut. From there the path ran through Heracles Almelo and AZ Alkmaar, where in 2017–18 he shared the Eredivisie's top scorer standing with 18 goals and led the KNVB Cup's scoring charts with nine, numbers that took him to Wolfsburg in Germany.

The move to England came later, first with Burnley, then through a string of loans that showed how much clubs valued him even in short-term form: Beşiktaş, Manchester United and Hoffenheim. At Manchester United he was named Man of the Match in the 2022–23 EFL Cup final, a rare honour for a player on loan. On the international stage, his biggest moment came at the 2022 World Cup, where he scored twice against Argentina in the quarter-final. He made his Netherlands debut in March 2018 against England and has gone on to earn caps and goals for the national side, including a bronze medal at Euro 2024.

His first season at Ajax, in 2024–25, passed without a major trophy for the club. Weghorst remains a physical presence up front, the kind of target man whose route to the top level ran through Dutch football's second tier rather than a direct path through the biggest academies.
