Al-Salmiya sit in the Kuwaiti Premier League, where the club has twice had to fight through relegation playoffs, in 2010–11 and 2012–13, and come through both without dropping out of the top flight.
The badge carries green and blue for land and sea, a nod to Salmiya's position on Kuwait's northern coast, but the shirts are sky blue, and that colour gave the club its nickname, Al-Samawi. It was registered in the official gazette on 13 June 1964.
The club has also sent players outward into continental competition — Odai Al-Saify finished as the AFC Cup's top scorer in 2007 while wearing the sky blue.
Across the northern suburbs of Kuwait City, the fixture against Al-Arabi still carries the weight of a local derby.
