Bärnbach/Köflach sit today outside the top flight of Austrian handball: promotions won in 2009/10 and again in 2018/19 brought the side back into the Handball Liga Austria, though staying there has proved harder than getting there.

The club came together in 1992, when HC Bärnbach and HC Köflach merged. Both had already won something on their own — Bärnbach took the Staatsliga in 1974 and 1976, Köflach in 1982 — and under the combined name, HSG Bärnbach/Köflach went on to take the national title itself, back to back in 1999 and 2000, and added the Austrian Cup in 2001.

Vladimir Vujović took over on the bench in 2020 and stayed through 2022.

Home games still split between two towns rather than one: the Sporthalle Bärnbach and the Sporthalle Köflach , each holding 1,000.

The fixture that matters most is against HSG Graz.
