The club began life as Club Deportivo Vasconia on 26 December 1959, formed under the Baskonia-Alavés Group and its president, Félix Ullivarriarrazua. It took the name Club Deportivo Basconia in 1976, then became Saski-Baskonia in 1988 when it turned into a public limited sports company.
The blue and garnet colours, with white for away games, gave the club its "azulgrana" identity, while the city gave it a nickname: Los Vitorianos . Baskonia has won the Liga ACB four times, in 2002, 2008, 2010 and 2020, and the Copa del Rey seven times. In Europe, the club's high point came in 1996, when it beat PAOK to lift the FIBA Saporta Cup; it reached the EuroLeague final twice, in 2001 and 2005, but did not win either.
