In 1968, Ram Meadow held Third Division leaders Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic to a goalless draw in front of 3,000 people, the first time Bury Town had reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup.
Founded in 1872 by William Lake as Bury St Edmunds, it became Bury Town in 1885, reverted to Bury St Edmunds a decade later, then turned into Bury United in 1908 after merging with Bury Alexandra, before settling back on Bury Town in 1923.
Promotion arrived again in 2009–10, when the club won the Southern League Division One Midlands and went up to the Isthmian League Premier Division, followed two years later by the Isthmian League Cup.
Few at Ram Meadow are spoken of the way William Lake still is. He founded the club in 1872, and everything that followed — the name changes, the floodlights, the two trebles — traces back to that starting point.
