Comillas

When a group broke away from the youth ranks of AD Loyola, an association tied to the Colegio Sagrado Corazón, they named their new project after the Pontifical University of Comillas, another Jesuit institution. That split became official in 2008, though the two sides kept working together on youth football rather than treating each other as rivals — a relationship that continues to this day.

For a decade after that, Comillas CF barely existed as a senior side at all. Between 2008 and 2018 the club fielded no first team. Only in 2018 did a senior side return, entering the Regional Preferente de La Rioja, and the following season it finished second to reach Tercera División for the first time in its history. That promotion opened the door to the Copa del Rey in 2019–20, and Comillas made the most of it: they beat CD Barquereño on penalties in the preliminary round, goalkeeper Arróniz saving the decisive spot-kick, before running into Villarreal CF in the First Round and losing 0–5 at Las Gaunas.

A 2024 agreement with Real Sociedad to help develop young talent. What Comillas CF has never done, in nearly two decades since that split from Loyola, is win a senior honour of any kind or produce a player who went on to make a name in the professional game.
