Twenty-two European Cups between 1969 and 1990, thirteen of them won back to back, is a run no other club in the sport has matched, and it came from a team that spent the same stretch of years also winning thirty-two Soviet Championships. That dominance was built by players who barely needed to look up ice before finding each other: Valeri Kharlamov and Vladislav Tretiak anchored a side so complete that five of its forwards and defencemen — Fetisov, Larionov, Makarov, Krutov among them — later carried the same understanding straight into the NHL as the "Russian Five."

The club started life in 1946 as CDKA, the ice hockey wing of the Red Army's central sports house, and changed its name three more times as the military bureaucracy above it was renamed, settling on CSKA only in 1959. It plays now as Rosneft's team, still in the red, white and blue it wore under the Soviet flag.

The Soviet-era haul stopped when the league did. What followed was a longer wait than the club was used to: the first Russian Championship of the modern era did not arrive until 2015, and the Gagarin Cup, the KHL's own prize, only came in 2019, followed by two more in 2022 and 2023.

None of it dulled the derby with HC Spartak Moscow, still played as the Big Moscow Derby and still the fixture the city's fans circle first, ahead of the meetings with Dynamo Moscow or the trips to face SKA Saint Petersburg.

What CSKA has not done in the KHL era is stack titles the way it once did in the old league.
