Djurgårdens IF held 51 per cent of the new entity, Älvsjö AIK the remaining 49.

Under Thomas Dennerby, who coached both title-winning sides before moving on to manage the Swedish national team, the club reached the final of the UEFA Women's Cup in 2005, having already collected the Svenska Cupen in both 2004 and 2005. Runners-up finishes in the league followed in 2006 and 2007. Relegation from Damallsvenskan came in 1993 and again in 2012, each time followed by a return to the top flight.

Home matches are split between two grounds. Kristinebergs IP, capacity 2,145, is where the team trains and plays most weeks. For the derbies against AIK and Hammarby, and for matches held during the Djurgårdsfestivalen, the club moves to the larger Stockholms Stadion, capacity 14,417. Yellow, red and blue, in use across Djurgårdens IF since 1896, remain the club's colours on the women's side too.

Before any of that, in 1989, Djurgårdens IF had already fielded a women's team of its own — the section that, fourteen years later, went into the merger with Älvsjö AIK and gave the combined club its start.
