Maykop is a city that measures itself against Krasnodar's bigger clubs more than against any neighbour of its own size. The club grew out of two disbanded rosters: graduates of the local student side Burevestnik joined players and coaches from Impuls, a Krasnodar club that had just folded, and the merger was registered on 8 October 1996 under the sponsorship of Adygea's culture minister, Adam Khanakh, and its interior minister, Vladimir Mikhnenko.

The team plays in white and blue at the Oshten Sports Complex, a hall which seats around a thousand. Its closest institutional tie is to Maykop State Technological University, with fixtures against Lokomotiv Kuban-2 a fixture of its own kind.

Third place in the Higher League in 2013/14 remains the club's best finish at that level, while the clearer title came a division below, winning the Superleague's third division in 2015/16 after beating Magnitka-Universitet in the final. Sergey Ivanov, an Honoured Master of Sport who played at the 1994 World Championship, is the name the club still measures its history against. Without a derby in Adygea itself, Dynamo MGTU has settled for a long-distance one, meeting Dynamo Ufa in what is known locally as the derby of the two Dynamos.

What holds the club to its origins is the roster it started with: a student team and the remnants of a Krasnodar side that had nowhere else to go.
