The play-off promotion in 1998, when the club still went by the name Stavropol-Pogranichnik, sent the team into the Superleague for the first time, and the following year it beat Moscow Dynamo in the promotion play-offs and closed the season with bronze in the Higher League. Those results sit at the top of a lineage that stretches back to Kavkaz, which had already taken the Zenit Sports Society championship of the USSR in 1980-1981 and, a decade later, the Russian Championship Class A title. Under the name Aleko the club took the Higher League's Division B in 1993-1994, and later, as Dynamo-Stavropol, added the Cup of the Southern Federal District in 2008.

The club now on court carries none of those names. It grew out of a university sports section at the North-Caucasus Federal University in 2012, became the university's representative side in 2019, and only in 2022, once Dynamo-Stavropol folded its basketball operation into a partnership with the university, took up professional competition in the Higher League as Yuzhnyi Slon-Stavropol. The rebranding kept the elephant: Southern Elephants is the name supporters use in Stavropol.

A gold medal in 3x3 at the Festival of Culture and Sports of the Peoples of the South of Russia has followed the team into its newer form.

What the club has not managed since 2022 is a return to the kind of season Stavropol basketball produced under its earlier names — a title run, or promotion out of the Higher League.
