Gerd Backhaus finished the 1963-64 season as the leading scorer in the DDR-Oberliga and took an Olympic bronze medal in 1964. Stendal had joined the East German top flight in the 1950s and stayed long enough to matter: fourth place in 1956 remains the best the club has managed.
The one final came in 1966. Lok reached the FDGB-Pokal decider and lost it 1-0 to BSG Chemie Leipzig.
It became FSV Lok Altmark Stendal in 1990, then 1. FC Lok Stendal in 2002 after merging with 1. FC Stendal. FC Kaiserslautern ended it.
Then came the accounting. Insolvency in 2003, insolvency again in 2006. The club kept playing through both. It now sits in the NOFV-Oberliga Süd, the fifth tier, after coming up from the Verbandsliga Sachsen-Anhalt.
Kurt Liebrecht won 16 caps for East Germany from here.
