Kristiane Knutsen spent the 2019–2020 season at Ski before going on to earn her first cap for Norway. June Krogh wore the same colours earlier in her career, on her way to the national team as well; Mie Rakstad, now in the German Bundesliga, traces her handball back to the same corner of Akershus.

The club grew out of separate paths for its men's and women's sides: the men's team took shape on 7 June 2000, while the women played as a department of that club until they broke off to stand on their own for the 2007/2008 season. Neither side has landed a national title. What Follo HK has instead is a habit of climbing back up: the men reached the REMA 1000-ligaen in 2008, dropped out and returned in 2019, then again in 2024 after being relegated in 2020. The women followed a similar pattern, promoted in 2019, relegated, and back in the top flight from 2023.

Against Halden Topphåndball, also from the Østfold area and also built around developing players rather than buying finished ones, the club's own coaching staff have called the fixture a "mini-derby." Matches against Fjellhammer carry no such label, though the two sides meet often enough at the top of the table for it not to need one.

Since 2011/2012 the team has played its home matches in Langhus, in a hall holding 2,500 that used to carry the FolloTrykk name before it became Stil Arena.
