IFK Göteborg's women topped Division 1 Södra in 2025, a result that carried the club up into Elitettan, Sweden's second tier in women's football, where it plays out the 2026 season. The climb had run through the divisions in order — Division 3 in 2021, then Division 2's Nordvästra Götaland group in 2022 — before this latest step up.

The side did not exist before 18 November 2019, when IFK Göteborg's men's-side leadership chose to build a top-flight women's team of its own and ended the arrangement that had sent its women through Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC, now BK Häcken. Marcus Lantz, who had coached at Kopparbergs/Göteborg, took charge, working alongside sporting director Peter Svanström.

The team carries the men's club's colours and nicknames: blue and white, and The Angels — Änglarna to Swedish fans — alongside Blåvitt, the Blue-and-Whites, and Kamraterna, the Comrades. City rivalries follow the same lines, with GAIS in a fixture known as both Göteborgsklassikern and Arbetarderbyt, the workers' derby, and with Örgryte IS across town. Ahead of the Elitettan season, forward Beata Kollmats joined in March 2026 from Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC.

Home matches are played at Valhalla IP in Gothenburg, where around 4,000 fit in — 1,200 of them seated under a roof.
