Nile Kinnick played one season that mattered, 1939, and the stadium has carried his name ever since. He won the Heisman Trophy that year, went to war a few years later; the university retired his number, 24, and never gave it to anyone else. That single season sits at the centre of how Iowa City tells the story of this program, founded in 1889 and known ever since by a nickname the state itself carries — Hawkeye, taken from the Sauk leader Black Hawk and later fixed in the public mind by James Fenimore Cooper's frontier scout of the same name.

The team's best stretch on the field came without much reward at the time. In 1960, under Forest Evashevski, Iowa went 8–1 and was named national champion by several independent selectors, yet conference rules kept the Big Ten's runner-up out of bowl games that year, so the season passed with no postseason stage at all — remembered locally as the Forgotten Season. Titles in 1921, 1922, 1956 and 1958 came before that, part of a run of Big Ten championships stretching from 1900 to 2004, the last two of them delivered under Kirk Ferentz, who took the job in 1999.

Hayden Fry's arrival changed the program's standing more than any single trophy: Big Ten titles in 1981 and 1985, a Rose Bowl appearance, and a run of Pro Football Hall of Famers — Andre Tippett, Paul Krause, Emlen Tunnell, Alex Karras, Duke Slater — whose name now shares top billing on the stadium with Kinnick's. Slater, a lineman who broke through decades before the NFL's own integration held firm, waited far longer than his teammates for that recognition.

What the record still lacks is a national title recognised outside the old wire-service ballots — none of the championships claimed by Iowa carries a title actually contested on the field in a modern playoff format.
