Andri Már Rúnarsson pulls on the green shirt at the Quarterback Immobilien Arena the way generations before him did at the old Arena Leipzig. SC DHfK Leipzig grew out of the Deutsche Hochschule für Körperkultur. Founded in 1954, it won the East German championship six times through the 1960s.
A cup double in 1971 and 1972 followed, and then the handball section was moved away from the club in 1975. What has carried since is the rivalry: the Mitteldeutschland-Derby against ThSV Eisenach and the Elbe-Derby against SC Magdeburg still give the season its sharpest evenings, the kind where the Leutzscher Welle behind the goal makes itself heard longest.
Leipzig also has a women's side built on a separate line, Handball Club Leipzig, whose six Bundesliga titles between 1998 and 2010 and seven German Cups belong to a different ground and a different colour scheme entirely. For SC DHfK, though, the identity stays with green and white, with a nickname the fans use more than the full name, and with an arena in Leipzig that fills for the derbies in a way that still surprises visiting clubs.
