Madeira Andebol SAD Women

The women's handball section in Funchal grew out of a merger between the handball department of C.S. Marítimo and the independent club Académico Funchal. What followed was one-sided domestic dominance: nineteen Portuguese Women's Championship titles between 1999 and 2024, alongside twenty Portuguese Cups and twenty consecutive Supertaça triumphs from 1999 to 2018. A men's section existed alongside the women's team for years, taking the national league in 2004–05 and the cup in 1998–99 before the men's side reached the final of the European Challenge Cup in 2018–19, losing out as runners-up. In 2023 the handball operation folded back into C.S. Marítimo itself.

Joana Oliveira arrived in 2025 as the club's marquee signing, a Portugal international who had spent time at Juve Lis and SIR 1.º de Maio before returning to represent Madeira SAD. Goalkeeper Isabel Góis and line players Maria Duarte and Sandra Ramos all renewed their contracts for the 2025/2026 campaign.

There is no local rival to speak of in Funchal. The real contests come on the mainland, where Benfica and Porto play out the sport's defining derby and Madeira SAD's travelling side tries to break in from the Atlantic. At home, matches are played out in yellow and blue inside the Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo do Funchal.
