Umuganda Stadium in Gisenyi holds 5,000 people, and police lines go up around the ground before kick-off. Marines take their colours, white and red, into a fixture that outweighs anything else on their calendar.

The football side of the club has spent most of its history mid-table or lower, with a sixth-place finish in the 2008–09 Rwanda Premier League standing as its high point. By 2024–25 Marines were back in the National Football League, the second tier, after finishing 14th in the top flight the previous season. It is Marines FC's basketball section, not the football team, that holds the club's one national title, the 2007 National Basketball League championship.

Bienvenue Mugenzi finished as the club's top scorer in 2014–15 with nine goals, a return good enough to take him to APR FC and into Rwanda's U23 and senior national squads.

None of that carries the weight, locally, of the Rubavu Derby.
