Rayon Sports

Kigali has one ground big enough to hold a national occasion, and for most of the past half-century Rayon Sports have been the club that fills it. Stade Amahoro sits in the east of the capital, and after the 2024 rebuild it takes 45,508 people.

The club came out of Nyanza, the old royal seat south of Kigali, in May 1968. Red and white are the colours; the nickname, Gikundiro , means the adored one.

The trophies arrive in two distinct waves. The first league title came in 1975, the second in 1981, and then nothing for sixteen years — a barren spell that ended in 1997 and was immediately followed by a second championship in 1998, the same season the club took the Rwandan Cup. Nine league titles in all, the most recent in 2018-19.

The cup record is longer and steadier: eleven wins, spread from 1976 to 2023.

Which is the awkward part. Rayon have not been champions of Rwanda since 2019.
