Marquense

The Clásico del Occidente against Xelajú MC has run since 24 September 2000, and it settles nothing by geography alone: Marquense plays out of San Marcos, in the western highlands, while Xelajú carries Quetzaltenango, the region's larger city, and the rivalry has outlasted every other storyline the club has produced.

The club began life in 1958 as Estudiantes, reached the old Liga Mayor "A" in 1962 and dropped straight back out four years later after finishing bottom. What followed was three decades in the lower divisions before Marquense returned to the Liga Nacional in May 2000. The comeback held: by 2006 the club was in a Clausura final, lost to Municipal, then reached another final in 2007 and lost that one too, 1-4 to Xelajú after winning the first leg 1-0 at home.

The short-tournament era brought the finals the earlier ones had promised. Marquense lost Apertura finals in 2019 and 2023, to Deportivo Achuapa and Juventud Pinulteca, before winning the Apertura in 2021 for its first title and the Clausura in 2024 for its second — a gap of eighteen years between the first final appearance and the first trophy.

The nickname Leones de San Marcos sits alongside two others tied to the region: Los Indomables Leones de Occidente and El Felino de Candacuchex. Home colours are yellow shirts with red shorts and red socks; away kit is white throughout. The club plays at Estadio Marquesa de la Ensenada, opened on 23 April 1963 and holding 11,000.

Between the 1966 relegation and the 2000 promotion, Marquense spent more than thirty years outside the top flight.
