Masaryk University

Peter Bustin was a student at Masaryk University when he helped start its hockey team, and for the first seasons he was the captain and the leading scorer. He founded it in 2017 with two other students, Josef Novák and Ondřej Stehlík. They played in black and white at first. The blue, white and gold came in 2019.

The results arrived quickly. The team won the Academic Championship of the Czech Republic in 2018, 2019 and 2020, three years running. In Europe they reached the semi-finals of the European University Hockey League (EUHL) in 2018/2019. The following season they took bronze in its Eastern Division. At home they finished second in the University League of Ice Hockey in 2019/2020, but the playoffs were cancelled because of COVID-19 and the final was never played.

Jiří Čtvrtníček led the scoring in the first two seasons and later became head coach. The match that gives the club its biggest crowds is the Brno university derby against the Brno University of Technology side, the VUT Cavaliers. Once it filled the Kajot Arena with 7,000 people, a record for university hockey in the region. On an ordinary night the team plays in the Children and Youth Hockey Hall, which holds 500. Big derbies move to the 7,700-seat Winning Group Arena.

The last two seasons were harder. The team finished 10th in 2024/2025 and 11th in 2025/2026. Maxmilián Edl captained them through the second of those. He has also played for the Czech Republic at the World University Cup. Under its earlier name, HC MUNI, the club had gone by "the Blues" (Modří). For 2026/2027 it plays as MUNI Bears Brno.

The club began as a student project, three friends with a team to fill, and Bustin was among them.
