Minutemen

On 22 November 1879, when the school in Amherst was still called Massachusetts Agricultural College, its football team took the field for the first time and beat the Amherst College freshman side 4–0. The programme that grew from that afternoon spent decades under other names — Aggies, then Statesmen, then Redmen — before becoming the Minutemen in 1972, when concerns over Native American imagery pushed the college to drop the old identity.

The football side of that history is uneven. For years the Minutemen collected Yankee Conference titles, seventeen of them between 1960 and 1990, then found a different level altogether in 1998, when the team beat Montana for the NCAA Division I-AA national championship. It had already come close once, losing the 1978 title game, and would lose another, in 2006, after taking three further Atlantic 10 championships and, in 2007, the Colonial Athletic Association crown. The step up to the top tier of college football, the Football Bowl Subdivision, came in 2011, and with it a stretch in the Mid-American Conference, a period as an independent, and a return to the MAC in 2025.

Isaiah Rodgers is the name the programme points to now: a sixth-round pick out of Amherst in 2020 who went on to win the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. Earlier draft classes sent players like Greg Landry to the Detroit Lions and Andy Isabella to the Arizona Cardinals, but it is the rivalry with Boston College, the "Battle of the Bay State," that still carries the most weight on the schedule, with the Eagles well ahead in the series.

Home games are played in maroon and white at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium, on the Amherst campus, a ground the team left for two seasons during the move up to FBS level — playing instead at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough — before coming back in 2014 to a McGuirk rebuilt at a cost of $34.5 million.
