Motril

José Callejón and Juanmi Callejón grew up in Motril, and though neither ever wore the current club's shirt, both have spoken up for it since — a small tie between the town's most famous footballing exports and the side that plays a few streets from where they started out. Manu del Moral, once a striker in his own right, later took charge of the team from the touchline. CF Motril itself is not the club that made this city's name in Spanish football; that was Motril Club de Fútbol, which climbed as far as the Segunda División B in 2001–02, lost a play-off to Getafe CF for a place in the second tier, and then spent a decade sliding back down before its debts finished it off in July 2012. What exists now was formed that same year, starting again from the Segunda Provincial de Granada rather than inheriting anything from the old entity beyond the shirt colours. The climb back up was quick by the standards of regional football: the Segunda Provincial title arrived within a year, in 2012–13, and by 2015–16 the club had worked its way through the Segunda Andaluza and Primera Andaluza in successive seasons. Locally there is also the Copa Mancomunidad de Costa Tropical, won twice, and the Trofeo Ciudad de Motril, taken three times, alongside a rivalry with Recreativo Granada that Motril followers call the Derbi Provincial. A youth side, CF Motril B, was added in 2020, giving the club its own pipeline rather than relying on players passing through. Home games are played in front of just over 5,000 seats at the Estadio Escribano Castilla, on Andalusia's Costa Tropical, where the club's supporters go by the nickname Costeros — coastal people, named for the stretch of Granada province the team represents.
