Olsztyn's handball side traces back to a split rather than a founding in the usual sense: in 1998 the section broke away from the multi-sport Kolejowy Klub Sportowy Warmia Olsztyn and carried the Warmia name forward on its own. Locally the team is known simply as Warmiacy, and it plays at Hala Urania, which held roughly 4,046 seats after work on the building was finished in December 2023.

The club has changed shirts and sponsors more than once, appearing at various points as Warmia Traveland and Warmia Społem, and under the Traveland name it took the Polish Beach Handball Championship in 2010. On the indoor side, Warmia spent seven seasons in the Ekstraklasa between 2005 and 2012, promoted at the start of that run and relegated at the end of it; a fifth-place finish in 2008/2009 marked its best showing there. Mieczysław Nowak coached the club through the earlier of its two promotions, in 2001 and again in 2005, before the top-flight spell that followed.

Marcin Malewski came up through the club's own academy and wore the captain's armband for years. The fiercest fixture on the calendar is against Elbląg, played as the Derby Warmii i Mazur, with matches against Grudziądz carrying similar weight in the regional table.

After winning Group A of the I Liga in 2020/2021, Warmia went back up to the Liga Centralna, where it stayed until relegation in 2023 sent it back down to the second tier.
