The Moda Center holds 19,393 for basketball, up to 20,796 with standing room, and has stood since 1995 under a different name before its 2013 rebrand. It is also where the Portland Trail Blazers play, and now shares its floor with the city's newest WNBA tenant.

Portland has carried a team by this name before. The original Fire ran from 2000 to 2002, closed out with a 16–16 record and a fifth-place finish in the Western Conference. The revival is not a continuation but a fresh franchise: RAJ Sports, led by Alex Bhathal and Lisa Bhathal Merage, was awarded the league's 15th expansion slot in September 2024, and the club unveiled its name and logo, a rose merged with a flame inside a shield, on 15 July 2025. Play began in the 2026 season.

Alex Sarama took over as head coach in October 2025, with Vanja Černivec as general manager. Portland used its first pick in the 2026 WNBA Expansion Draft on Bridget Carleton, taken No. 1 overall from the Minnesota Lynx.

A rivalry with the Seattle Storm, already framed as the Northwest Rivalry.

Portland Fire play in red, brown, blue and pink, and for now, that is what the city sees returning to the Moda Center's floor.
