Puntarenas FC

Puntarenas had gone without top-flight football for the best part of two years when Eduardo Lee and Adrián Castro decided the port city needed a club again. On 30 June 2004 they did it by buying the A.D. Santa Bárbara franchise outright and renaming it. Two seasons later that gamble paid off in a way nobody could have scripted: with Hernán Medford in charge and Kurt Bernard leading the line, Puntarenas FC won the Copa Interclubes UNCAF in 2006, becoming Central American champions.

Bernard's name is still the one attached to that run. He went on to score 40 goals for the club in the top flight, enough to stand as its all-time record, and later that year played for Costa Rica at the World Cup.

The club worked its way back the hard way, winning both the Apertura and Clausura halves of the 2021–22 Segunda División to earn automatic promotion. Alajuelense denied them again in March 2025, this time in the Copa Costa Rica final.

Home games are played at the Estadio Lito Pérez, nicknamed La Olla Mágica — the Magic Pot — a name that outsizes its capacity of 4,105.
