New Farm Road runs through Colchester to a ground that holds 1,500 people, barely a tenth of them under a roof, and it is there that Stanway Rovers have spent this year adjusting to life in the Isthmian League Premier Division, a step up earned by winning the Essex Senior League Premier Division in 2024–25. The yellow-and-black shirts turn out purple on the road, a swap that has stayed fixed for longer than most of what the club has won.

The honours themselves sit mostly a division or two below where the club plays now: the Eastern Counties League Division One in 2005–06, its League Cup in 2008–09 and again in 2011–12, and, further back still, a string of Essex and Border League titles running to 1927–28. Two more, the Errington Challenge Cup and the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy, arrived together in 2023–24, the season before the jump up the pyramid.

Karl Duguid is the name attached to that climb. He played for the club either side of a spell managing it, then returned as manager again in 2021, and has been there through the promotion and the cup double that preceded it. Ruel Fox came the other direction, arriving in 2002 once Norwich, Newcastle, Tottenham and West Brom were behind him, and never took the field in a competitive match.

Wivenhoe Town remain the fixture with an edge to it, spoken of locally as a meeting of old foes; Maldon & Tiptree are the other side that gets that word attached. A women's team plays several rungs further down, in the Essex County Women's Football League, and reached the Essex Women's Trophy final in 2023–24 before losing out to Billericay Town's development side.

Rovers only since a re-establishment on 10 July 1956, the name goes back further still, to a Stanway Rovers that first took the field in 1922 and, in time, folded.
