Needham Market

Needham Market is a small Suffolk village on the road between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, the kind of place where a football club become the surest way for its name to travel further than the parish boundary. That is roughly what happened here: a side with an unbroken run since 1919, though older teams under the same name are recalled from the 1890s, carried the village's name into competitions the place itself would never otherwise reach.

For most of that span they moved between local grounds, playing at Young's Meadow and then Crowley Park before a National Lottery grant, topped up by a bequest from the estate of former player Arthur Rodwell, paid for the move to Bloomfields in 1996. The ground took its name not from a place but from a person — Derrick Bloomfield, a former player and clubman — and now holds 4,000, with a small stand added in 2018 sitting above covered terracing.

The club's honours read as a record of steady rather than sudden rise: county and league titles through the 1930s, 40s and 50s gave way to the Eastern Counties League Premier Division in 2009–10, promotion through the Isthmian League in 2014–15, and the Southern League Premier Division Central title in 2023–24. A run to the FA Vase semi-finals in 2007–08 remains the deepest cup run in the club's history, matched only in ambition by a quarter-final appearance in the FA Trophy in 2021–22. Kevin Horlock, who arrived as player-assistant manager in 2008, built the academy that still feeds the club today.

Matches against Leiston are known locally as the Big Suffolk Derby, though Needham Market have yet to turn any of their recent league progress into a national final worth remembering beyond the county.
