Tar Heels

Football at Chapel Hill began the way most of it did in the 1880s: students at the University of North Carolina put together a team, and in 1888 that team took the field for the first time. The Tar Heels have played through most of American football's history since, long enough that they have won conference titles under three different leagues — three championships in the old Southern Conference, five more after the move to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The best individual season came in 1972, when North Carolina won eleven games for the first time in its history and closed it out with a Sun Bowl victory. The postseason record overall is uneven — 15 wins against 22 losses across 37 bowl appearances — including defeats in the Sugar Bowl in both 1946 and 1948.

What the program is chiefly remembered for, though, is what it sent to the NFL.
