Terrapins

A retroactive title from 1951, when the Terrapins went 10–0, sits alongside it.

The team traces to a squad first fielded at the Maryland Agricultural College in 1892, and it carried the "Old Liners" name for years before Harry "Curley" Byrd, then coach and university president, renamed it the Terrapins in 1933. Byrd's own name later went onto the stadium, then came off it in 2015 once his history of segregation caught up with the record; the ground has been rebranded twice since, most recently as SECU Stadium in 2022.

Nine ACC championships followed founding-member status in the conference from 1953, with three straight arriving under Jerry Claiborne in the mid-1970s after a decade of decline. Maryland left the ACC altogether in 2014 for the Big Ten. A 2018 crisis under D.J. Durkin forced a rebuild that Mike Locksley has since carried through recent bowl wins over Virginia Tech and Auburn.

Randy White went from Maryland's defensive line to Super Bowl XII MVP with the Dallas Cowboys, and Boomer Esiason took a Maryland arm to an NFL MVP award and a Super Bowl appearance with Cincinnati.
