The women's team at MKS AZS UMCS Lublin has come closest to a national trophy in the Polish Cup, reaching the quarter-finals in the 2018/2019 season before losing to EKS Start Elbląg. Founded within KU AZS UMCS Lublin, the university sports association that grew out of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in 1944, the handball section has a history within the university sports framework. Both the men's and women's sides now play in the I Liga, the second level of Polish handball, and share the university's green and white colours.

The club is easy to confuse with a different Lublin institution, MKS Lublin, the Ekstraklasa side that has won the EHF Cup and the EHF Challenge Cup — those honours belong to a separate club, not to the university team. AZS UMCS Lublin's identity sits instead within the wider AZS network: its games against AZS AWF Warszawa carry the weight of the "Academic Derby," a fixture rooted in the rivalry between Poland's university sports clubs rather than in league standing.

Both handball teams play their home matches at the Globus Arena, a hall named after Tomasza Wójtowicza that holds 1,800 spectators.
