Student sport in Warsaw ran through the AZS network long before there was a league to join it to, and the university's handball section traces itself to 1918, two years after the parent club had already organised itself in July 1916. It grew, like most AZS sections, as a way of putting students from the same lecture halls onto the same team rather than as a project aimed at silverware.

That shows in the honours list. AZS Warszawa took silver in the 7-a-side championship in 1946, in the rubble years just after the war, then won the 11-a-side national title in 1953 — still the high point of the club's history. Bronze followed twice in the early sixties, in the 1961/62 and 1962/63 seasons, and nothing at that level since. A separate club sharing the AZS name, AZS AWF Warszawa, built up a run of Polish Cup wins from the 1960s into the 1980s, but that record belongs to the Academy of Physical Education side, not to the university team.

AZS UW now plays in the third-tier I Liga, its games held at the CSiR UW hall on ulica Banacha, a students' sports centre rather than a purpose-built handball venue, fitted with mobile stands rather than fixed seating. The fixture that still draws attention locally is against Warszawianka, played as the Warsaw Derby, one of the few occasions the section's results reach beyond the university itself. The club plays in green and white, AZS's shared colours across all its sections in the city.

What the team has not managed since 1953 is a return to the top division of Polish women's handball, or to any final worth marking on the wall of the hall on Banacha.
