Ural

In 1930 workers at the Ural Heavy Machine-Building Plant, known by its Russian abbreviation UZTM, formed a team of their own, and for decades the club's name simply followed the factory: Uralmashstroy, then Uralmashzavod, later Avangard and Mashinostroitel. Only in 2003, once the general sponsor behind that identity disappeared, did the team become Ural.

The orange and black kit gave the club its nickname, Shmeli — the Bumblebees. Silverware has been scarcer than the name changes: three FNL Cup wins, in 2012, 2013 and 2018, sit alongside two runs to the Russian Cup final that ended without the trophy. In the top flight, an eighth-place finish, recorded in both 1993 and 1995, remains the high point.

Pavel Pogrebnyak arrived in 2018 and spent three seasons as the club's most recognisable forward, a rare case of a player with a national-team past choosing to settle in Yekaterinburg rather than pass through it. Ural's sharpest rivalry, meanwhile, belonged to a fixture that no longer exists: matches against Perm's Amkar were billed as the Ural derby until that club was dissolved in 2018.

The team now plays at the Ekaterinburg Arena, which holds 35,000, a stadium built for a World Cup rather than for a factory side. It is a long way from the plant workers who first put on a shirt in 1930 simply because their workplace fielded a team.
