Vikingur

Seven Icelandic men's championships came inside a span of thirteen years for Víkingur. The titles landed in clusters either side of it, in 1975, then 1981 through 1983, and again in 1986 and 1987, with six domestic cups won across roughly the same years.

Guðmundur Guðmundsson was at the centre of that era, first as a player from 1979, later taking over as coach in 1989 and leaving with six championships and four cups to his name by the time he moved on in 1992.

The women's team took three straight championships from 1992 to 1994 and two cups in the same stretch, with Inga Lára Þórisdóttir captaining the side and Halla María Helgadóttir among its leading scorers.

Since then the men's team has fallen out of the top flight, playing the 2024/2025 season in the second-tier 1. deild karla after relegation from the Olísdeild karla. Home matches go to Laugardalshöll, a 2,300-capacity hall the club shares rather than owns outright, alongside the Safamýri and Réttó facilities.

The club itself traces back to 21 April 1908, founded in the capital under the colours, red and black, that its handball players still wear as Víkingarnir.
