KA's best handball years came in a tight cluster around the turn of the millennium: the Icelandic championship in 1997 and again in 2002, three national cups won either side of it in 1995, 1996 and 2004, and three league cups between 1996 and 2001. The generation that carried those years through had been shaped a few seasons earlier by Alfreð Gíslason, who served as player-coach from 1991 to 1995, and it was into that same group that Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson broke through, playing for KA from 1998 before moving on to a career.

The section traces back to KA's founding on 8 January 1928 as a multi-sport club in Akureyri, and it kept its own identity in the Úrvalsdeild until 2006, when it merged with local rival Þór to form a joint side, Akureyri Handboltafélag. The two clubs' meetings had long been known as the Akureyri derby, and putting them under one roof was meant to give the town a side strong enough to compete at the top. It worked, for a while: the joint team took the regular-season title in 2011 and reached both the cup final and the playoff final that year, losing the latter to FH in front of a record crowd of 2,950 at Kaplakriki.

Relegation at the end of the 2016–17 season broke the arrangement. KA pulled its players out and rebuilt an independent men's section for 2017–18, while Þór carried the joint name on for a few more years before it was wound up. KA finished second in the second division that first season back and returned to the top flight in 2018, playing its home games at KA-heimilið in yellow and blue.
