Würzburg Baskets measure themselves against medi Bayreuth.

The current entity dates only to 2007, set up by Jochen Bähr and Klaus Heuberger after the original DJK Würzburg, whose basketball department went back to 1920, resigned its Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) licence in 2005 and folded its professional side under financial insolvency. Starting again in the fourth tier, the rebuilt club took the Regionalliga in 2009 and the second division in 2015, which put it back in the BBL a decade after the old side had dropped out of it.

Sponsors have rewritten the name on the shirt almost every few years — s.Oliver Baskets, s.Oliver Würzburg, FIT/One, now Fitness First Würzburg Baskets — while the club itself stayed put at what is now the tectake Arena, a hall that holds 3,140 for basketball. The deepest run in Europe came in 2018–19, when the team reached the final of the FIBA Europe Cup and lost to Dinamo Sassari.

Dirk Nowitzki wore the shirt from 1994 to 1998, before Dallas, and was named German Basketballer of the Year in his last season there; Maxi Kleber came through more recently, from 2011 to 2014, before he too left for the Mavericks. The women's side, playing under the DJK banner, had already won the national championship in 1993.
