Acinque Ice Arena
Varese, Italy
Formerly: PalAlbani, PalTenconi (proposed name)
Acinque Ice Arena presents a low, sweeping curve.
The arena was originally a construction site for a new era. The demolition was thorough, stripping the building down to its bones before it was rebuilt. The new structure carries the weight of that history, designed to be a Nearly Zero Energy Building.
It is not just a rink. The surface is artificial ice, maintained by a refrigeration system embedded in the concrete slab. In the summer, the ice is covered by a removable track for in-line hockey. The complex also includes swimming pools and padel courts, making it a multi-purpose centre for the Varese community.
The local hockey team, Mastini, has called this place home since it opened. The arena hosted international matches and galas, drawing crowds that filled the seats. It is a modest venue, but one with a clear purpose.
