«Mastini»
Varese's only European trophy came in 1995, when the club beat Metallurg Magnitogorsk 4–3 in the final to lift the IIHF Federation Cup. Two Italian League Championships, in 1987 and 1989, sit either side of that run, and a Coppa Italia followed much later, in 2023.
The club has not always carried the same name while doing it. It went under in June 2005 and came back weeks later as Hockey Club Varese, then spent 2017 as Hockey Club Varese Bandits before the Mastini identity returned in 2018. In 2022 the operation split in two: the professional side became HCMV Varese Hockey under president Carlo Bino, while the youth structure stayed with Hockey Club Varese 1977, the name under which the club had started out.
The mastiff on the crest gave the team its nickname, and the yellow and black shirts gave it the other one, Gialloneri. Tom Barrasso, the American goaltender, took charge as head coach for the 2021–22 season before the club's restructuring. Home games are played in front of 1,000 seats at the Acinque Ice Arena.
Dave Rich has taken over behind the bench for the 2026 season, with the Coppa Italia win three years old and the league title still stuck at two, last renewed in 1989.
