Aréna Glencore

The Aréna Glencore sits at 218 Avenue Murdoch in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. Built in 1951 by the Noranda Mining Company as a gift to the company town after the Second World War, the venue was originally known as the Noranda Recreation Centre. It has been the home of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), surviving sponsorship shifts that renamed it Aréna Dave-Keon and later Aréna Iamgold.

The most substantial change to the structure came in the summer of 2011. A renovation costing $11.2 million modernized the mechanical refrigeration that keeps the artificial ice within standard dimensions. The project exceeded its initial budget, with funding split between the federal and provincial governments alongside local taxpayers. Several years later, the city spent $593,000 replacing rink boards to meet LHJMQ safety standards.

With a total capacity of 3,500, the arena serves as a central sports hub for Abitibi-Témiscamingue. The team hosted the QMJHL President’s Cup Finals here in 2008, 2016, and 2019, capturing the championship title in the latter two years. The 2019 victory was the culmination of a successful run that saw the Huskies win the Memorial Cup that same season. During those years, average attendance ranged from 2,015 to 2,228 fans, filling the stands more consistently than in quieter periods. Outside of sport, the venue hosts concerts and comedy shows.
