Construction ran through the pandemic years, from December 2019 to February 2023, carried out by local Turkmen contractors under the state authority overseeing the wider city project. The stadium's own opening followed the city's inauguration by only a few days: Arkadag hosted Akhal, the reigning national champion, on 1 July 2023 and won 3-0 in front of a full 10,000, a figure the ground has not since surpassed.
In March 2025, Arkadag beat India's East Bengal 2-1 in an AFC Challenge League quarter-final, the venue's first taste of continental competition. A further test is pencilled in for August 2026, against Goa in the preliminary round of the AFC Champions League Two.
