Three of Athens's biggest clubs have used this ground as home turf at different times. Panathinaikos first moved in during 1984, then left and returned across several spells through the 2000s and 2010s, coming back again in 2024. AEK Athens settled in from 2004, after their old Nikos Goumas ground was pulled down, and stayed until 2022. Olympiacos played two separate spells here, from 1984 to 1989 and again from 1997 to 2002.

The ground has hosted three European Cup finals: Hamburg beat Juventus in 1983, Milan thrashed Barcelona 4-0 in 1994, and Milan closed out a 2-1 win over Liverpool in 2007. The 1987 Cup Winners' Cup final between Ajax and Lokomotive Leipzig was played here too, along with the football final at the 2004 Olympics, where Argentina beat Paraguay.

The pitch is grown across roughly 6,000 individual plastic modules set into a concrete base, each fitted with its own irrigation and drainage.

Music has left its own marks. Giorgos Dalaras drew more than 160,000 people over two nights in September 1983. In May 2026, Metallica set a new stadium attendance record for a single show, with more than 90,000 in the crowd.
