Panathinaikos

Panathinaikos have taken the Greek championship twenty times and the Greek Cup the same number of times, the two ledgers running side by side from the first league title in 1930 through to the most recent, in 2010, rather than clustering into one short golden run.

The closest the club came to a European trophy was in 1971, when a side built by Ferenc Puskás reached the final of the European Cup and lost 0-2 to Ajax. Mimis Domazos captained that team and remains the club's leading scorer with 134 goals; two further semi-finals followed, in 1985 and 1996, and two quarter-finals after that.

The club began on 3 February 1908, when Georgios Kalafatis brought together a group of footballers in Athens under a name that changed twice before settling, in the early 1920s, on Panathinaikos. Green and white became the colours, and the nickname Trifýlli, the clover, has followed the club since.

Olympiacos of Piraeus is the rival that matters most, a fixture still known in Greece as the derby of the eternal enemies.

Krzysztof Warzycha spent over a decade in the forward line and left with 244 goals, still the highest total scored by a foreign player in Greek football.

Panathinaikos no longer play at their old ground on Alexandras Avenue, the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium, which holds around 16,000. Home matches are now held at the Athens Olympic Stadium, known as Spyros Louis, with a capacity of 69,618, while a new stadium in Votanikos is still under construction.
